Abstract

"In 1991 Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) was among the first new approaches that proved that behavioral psychology could be brought more fully and effectively into psychotherapy. In this long awaited volume, leaders in FAP show how the model has developed and provide guidance for its clinical implementation. Alone and in combination with other treatments, FAP speaks to some of the deepest clinical issues there are, and can empower clinical work virtually regardless of the clinician's current approach. Highly recommended." -Steven C. Hayes, Ph.D., University of Nevada "Functional Analytic Psychotherapy offers the best opportunity for the development of genuinely integrative therapeutic practice the field has ever seen. This guidebook to FAP should help to open up new exciting vistas to therapists of all theoretical persuasions. It is one of the most important books on psychotherapy in decades." -Alan S. Gurman, Ph.D., University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health "This volume describes an approach to therapy that creatively highlights the use of the therapy interaction as a sample of the client's problematic interpersonal relationships. Using an integrative blending of learning principles with sound clinical interaction skills, Functional Analytic Psychotherapy helps clients to learn what does and what does not get them what they want and need. All this is richly illustrated with case materials and therapy transcripts, providing the clinician with clear guidelines on how to implement this approach to therapy." -Marvin R. Goldfried, Ph.D., Stony Brook University For more than two decades, Functional Analytic Psychotherapy has brought new meaning, depth and intensity to client-therapist relationships by focusing on the subtle ways clients' daily life problems occur in the therapy session. FAP's nuanced, curative power can help clients with issues as varied as depression, anxiety, intimacy difficulties, personality disorders, problems of the self, substance abuse and OCD to move beyond their symptoms and into their passion for living and loving. In A Guide to Functional Analytic Psychotherapy, originators Mavis Tsai and Robert Kohlenberg join with other FAP practitioners to present a conceptual framework and treatment innovations that take readers through the deep complexities and possibilities of the therapeutic bond. This book also underscores how attention to mindfulness and the self makes maximum clinical use of the uniqueness of every client and every therapist. Highlights of the Guide: The five core principles of therapeutic technique. Empirical underpinnings of FAP interventions. Case studies and transcripts of assessment procedures and therapy sessions. Examples of how to use FAP alone and in combination with other therapies. Illustrations of the course of FAP, from the initial session to the end of therapy. Therapist self-development and supervision issues. Inspiring clients to improve society: the practice of "green FAP." Appendix of questionnaires, feedback forms, and other essential FAP tools. As this transformative therapy continues to grow in influence, A Guide to Functional Analytic Psychotherapy will be a vital, practice-enhancing reference for clinicians and graduate students.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

For more than a century, the psychotherapist role has been dominated by Freud's neutrality rule: don't become personally involved with patients! McCullough challenges this widely accepted dictum in a new treatment approach for the chronically depressed patient. He proposes disciplined personal involvement as an alternative to therapist neutrality with chronically depressed patients, describing how this approach can be used in a contingent manner to successfully modify pathological behavior. These latest guidelines expand on his pioneering work, Treatment for Chronic Depression: Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy(CBASP). In this new volume, Treating Chronic Depression with Disciplined Personal Involvement: CBASP, Dr. McCullough describes in detail what disciplined personal involvement is and how it is administered. The book was written during a current four-year national clinical trial sponsored by NIMH involving 910 chronically depressed outpatients being treated at eight sites in the U.S. The following topics will be covered: -Historical review of the psychotherapist neutrality role -Rationale for disciplined personal involvement in the treatment of chronic depression -Training veteran psychotherapists to administer disciplined personal involvement -Numerous verbatim case examples presented to illustrate therapist disciplined personal involvement -Appendix Section operationalizing the CBASP disciplined personal involvement techniques and discussing needed CBASP research McCullough's fresh perspective and psychotherapy wisdom make this text a must read for all clinical practitioners, training clinicians in university settings, and psychotherapy researchers. Treating Chronic Depression with Disciplined Personal Involvement: CBASP offers a radically new alternative to the traditional therapeutic relationship.

Abstract

Summary   Following the demise of the so-called grand theories offered by luminaries like Sigmund Freud, B. F. Skinner, and Carl Rogers, the field of psychology largely gave up its early aspirations to paint a broad picture of the human condition, and now the discipline focuses primarily on empirical problems that have a relatively narrow scope. The consequence has been a proliferation of interesting findings with no real capacity to answer big questions or to generate a shared general understanding of the human condition. This book seeks to change the status quo and offers up a new unified theory of psychology that redefines the science and the profession and paints a new picture of human nature in the process.  _____________________________________________________________________________   Praise for A New Unified Theory of Psychology   The field of psychology is known for its paradoxical combination of sweeping scope and impressive micro-theories, on the one hand, and fragmentation and internecine squabbling, on the other. To this state of affairs, any serious effort to provide integration and unity within psychological knowledge and understanding is heartily welcomed. And Henriques' effort in this regard is not only serious, but one of the most cogent, scholarly, sophisticated, beautifully reasoned, clearly articulated, and accessibly written presentations of a unified theory in psychology that I have seen in my 50 years in the discipline.   Daniel B. Fishman, Author of The Case for Pragmatic Psychology, Professor, Rutgers University   As the field of psychology has grown, so have the challenges of fragmentation and of misunderstandings. This brave book represents a noble quest to provide a broad, values-based, and scientific framework which holds the power to organize our work and move us forward in strong, new ways. Lawrence G. Calhoun, Author of Facilitating Post-Traumatic Growth,  Professor, University of North Carolina-Charlotte    In this very ambitious book, Henriques makes a strong case for why bold efforts are needed in the fragmented realm of psychological research and theory. Although different readers will likely make different judgments about how well Henriques has succeeded in his aims, it nevertheless is an act of intellectual daring that can perhaps inspire psychologists to look outside the narrow confines of a single laboratory paradigm and open their thinking to how to address the full range of human behavior and experience. Paul L. Wachtel, Author of Therapeutic Communication,  Distinguished Professor, CUNY    Concise, erudite, and practical, this book is a manifesto that challenges psychology to move past fragmented domains of knowledge to a consilient framework, which will allow multi-disciplinary discourse and scientific advances. I suggest all scientists, psychotherapists, and scholars spend some time familiarizing themselves with the concepts and suggestions presented in this seminal volume by a leading scholar. Jeffrey Magnavita, Author of Personality Guided Relational Psychotherapy, Founder of the Unified Psychotherapy Project

Abstract

Extensive studies have shown cognitive-behavioral therapy to be highly effective in treating anxiety disorders, improving patients' social functioning, job performance, and quality of life. Yet every CBT clinician faces some amount of client resistance, whether in the form of "This won't work," "I'm too depressed," or even "You can't make me!" Avoiding Treatment Failures in the Anxiety Disorders analyzes the challenges presented by non-compliance, and provides disorder- and population-specific guidance in addressing the impasses and removing the obstacles that derail therapy. Making use of extensive clinical expertise and current empirical findings, expert contributors offer cutting-edge understanding of the causes of treatment complications and innovative strategies for their resolution in key areas, including: The therapeutic alliance The full range of anxiety disorders (i.e., panic, PTSD, GAD) Comorbidity issues (i.e., depression, personality disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse, and chronic medical illness) Combined CBT/pharmacological treatment Ethnic, cultural, and religious factors Issues specific to children and adolescents Both comprehensive, and accessible, Avoiding Treatment Failures in the Anxiety Disorders will be welcomed by new and seasoned clinicians alike. The window it opens onto this class of disorders, plus the insights into how and why this treatment works, will also be of interest to those involved in clinical research.
